Matilda Jane Product Review

Disclosure: I received this product for free from Too Scoops Kids as coordinated by Matilda Jane Clothing in consideration for review publication. All opinions are my own.

Fun, cute, playful and easy to style! These are words that describe Matilda Jane’s Roller Coaster dress. Tween model, Chandler Anderson and her mother Tiffany Anderson, loved Matilda Jane’s dress the moment they saw it. And so did I! As described by Tiffany, she loves the simplicity of the dress and how easy it was to match with her daughter’s existing fashion accessories. The multiple colors and patterns eclectically, and beautifully match up together. As a working mother, Tiffany found the dresses’ simplicity also matters to her in terms of maintaining and keeping the dress clean. This was a plus for her.

Cupcakes Provided by LaDawn Bakery

I think mothers of young girls will find this dress playful and formal all in the same vein. The cute, whimsical colors and patterns make it a dress that can be worn on a fun day with the family, a day at an art and craft show or any other fun event. I also feel it is playful and casual enough to jump rope or just hang out. On the other hand, mothers like Tiffany believe the dress is cute and dressy enough to wear to Sunday church service, but also to school, and for after school activities.

For our shoot, we took an excursion to a couple places. Our first stop was a local bakery located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chandler had fun at the bakery relaxing outside sitting at their table and chairs with colorful cupcakes at her reach, and just hanging out with her mother for some mother-daughter time. Chandler also hung out at a local school where she jumped rope, read her books, and worked on her art and craft jewelry.

Matilda Jane’s fashions clearly distinguishes itself in the crowded fashion market as many fashion designs for young girls tend to lean toward making them look older. Matilda Jane’s dresses, like her Roller Coaster dress says the opposite with it’s playful, youthful and fashion forward look. Her brand is at once identifiable with its multi-layered textures of colors, ruffles, and patterns going in different directions yet meeting at the intersection of cute, youthful and fashionable.  Her designs are also easy to recognize as they hark back to a quiet rustic lifestyle yet the bold colors and patterns move it forward to a contemporary look that modern mothers like Tiffany can easily style with their daughter’s current fashion accessories while fitting in with their personal lifestyle.

Karen Jenkins

With a love for photography, entrepreneurship, young people and fashion, Karen M Jenkins of Spirit & Soul Photography, turned her diverse passions into a lifestyle, and editorial/commercial photography business that specializes in the entrepreneurial businesswoman and tween girl market.

Karen’s passion for fashion, business and photography was instilled as a kid, by her parents and her maternal grandmother. Her grandmother was an entrepreneur, fashion model, and a top saleswoman for Johnson Publishing Company (Chicago, Illinois Ebony Magazine) in the 1960′s. The seeds for art were planted by her mother who supplied Karen with lots of art supplies incubating a creative spirit and talent for fashion sketching the most elaborate gown designs. And, finally it was her dad, a high school dropout who later in life graduated with a Master’s Degree in Finance with honors from Xavier University in Cincinnati, a 15 year, plus career as a IRS agent and auditor, and later starting his own successful business as a CPA (certified Public Accountant) that Karen drew her entrepreneurial and educational aspirations. But it would be his hobby for taking pictures with an ole’ (new then) 35 mm manual focus camera that would nail Karen’s later in life, love for photography.

Like father, like daughter, Karen graduated from Miami University with a degree in history, and a Master’s of Art from Xavier University in Cincinnati. For over 13 years, she has been a faculty member of Northern Kentucky University (NKU), teaching writing and directing an academic support program, in which she hires and trains college students and faculty to facilitate and supervise college study sessions that help other students succeed in courses such as Chemistry, Biology and Nursing. In addition, Karen provides her college students with leadership roles that help develop them academically and professionally.

In addition, to working with college students, she has taught photography classes to pre-teens at the School of Creative Performing Arts in Cincinnati (the school Nick Lachey attended and supports). She provides entrepreneurial opportunities, giving them creative outlets to express themselves creatively, and make money. Through a successful photography exhibit, she curated, she encouraged her students to sell their professionally framed artwork. Ninety-nine percent of her students sold their work.

Karen’s love for fashion, young people, and entrepreneurship is evident in her pursuit of fashion, tween girl photo shoots for fashion brands such as Isossy Clothing for Kids, a designer brand out of London, England; FaithWork4U, a designer company out of Indiana and The Spotted Goose, a kid’s designer clothing boutique in Cincinnati. Recently, the mother from a nationally sought after tween fashion model contacted and expressed interest to participate in Spirit & Soul’s tween business girl shoot. Karen will travel to Chicago to conduct that shoot with tween model, Berkeley Clayborne.

Last, but not least, Karen’s other favorite group to work with are budding, small businesswomen. With this market, she provides design consultations in preparation for stylish photo shoots that project their brand and image to their clients via their website, social media, and publication material. Keeping line with Spirit & Soul Photography’s brand, all shoots are natural light, modern, fashionable and chic.

Spirit & Soul is available for tween commercial and lifestyle shoots along with small business shoots for those companies that want to project a modern and contemporary look.
