Little Poco: Q&A + Giveaway

I’m soooo excited about today’s post. “Curated with a nod toward global flavor”,  Little Poco is nothing short of adorable & original. This Brooklyn based brand is meant to “reflect the sabor (flavor) of childhood, littlepoco, is a full collection celebrating Latino life.”   I love everything about this collection and I am CRAZY for the “Tres Pop” skirt and I’m sure you will be too. Check our our Q&A with the designer and make sure to enter the giveaway below.

How did you decide to take the leap to open your own business? How long have you been in business?

Seven years ago, after leaving a career in television to have my twins, I was shocked by the lack of children’s clothing that spoke to my cultural. I knew what I wanted to see my own children in and decided to open an online shop showcasing my own designs and others from around the globe.

What is your inspiration behind this line?

My love of vintage clothing lead me to be inspired by the fabulous party skirts of the 50′s & 60′s. My little girl’s love, bordering on obsession, with tutus was all the encouragement I needed to add one underneath my “Tres Pop” skirts.

What other designers have been inspirations to you?

Of course I obsess over the old couture houses. The impeccable attention to detail and sumptuous materials make me swoon. Chanel, Valentino, Dior & Givenchy vintage to present day causes me to break out into a cold sweat.

But I think Im more moved by stylists. The people who put it all together in ways you never dreamed of are inspiring to me. The images in magazines, movies & all forms of media are what we fall in love with, long after the designer’s job is done. Patricia Field took fashion & made it iconic and literally a part of my generations popular culture {love it or hate it everyone remembers Carrie’s tutu in the opening credits of Sex in The City.}  Rachel Zoe kills it everytime and her love & devotion to designers is infectious. I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed watching June Ambrose over the years evolve and come into her own.

What is something that your customers would be surprised to learn about you?

Surprising, Im obsessed with Targets clothing for toddlers and young children. The imaginative fabrics and nod to global inspiration get me every time!

What is your favorite part of your day running a fashion line?

Best party of my day, is when I’ve got new samples for my children to try out.

It’s satisfying when they get as excited as me about a new concept and sobering when they point out issues with a garment.

What advice would you give to women who are aspiring entrepreneurs?

Study the success of others who’ve done what you would like to do. But more importantly study the failures  of others. By understanding completely what didn’t work, you can set up a better strategy in how to prosper.

How would you describe current fashion? What are people coming to you for?

Current fashion, is anything goes. If the most insane outfit I would never rock in a million years, is put cleanly together with thought, I applaud it.

Given that I live & design by “classics styles with unexpected textiles”, people love littlepoco clothing as “favorite pieces” for their children. Made for longevity, I’ve seen the younger sibling in one of my garments, as a hand me down. Many of my patrons have confided, they’ve put away one of our dresses, bow ties or skirts as a keepsake for their child. Mostly, people come to us looking for global flavor that is currently missing from children’s wear.
